You want your church to look its best, whether you’re preparing for your regular Sunday service or a special occasion, like Christmas, Easter, a baptism, or a wedding. We put together helpful church decoration ideas that will improve aesthetics without affecting the building’s functionality.

Before you Get Started

With limited time, volunteers, and budgeting, you won’t be able to decorate the church every week. But many of these ideas are fairly easy. And focusing on a few key parts of the church sanctuary can be more impactful than overloading people’s senses. You also don’t want to overpower the meaning behind the event or service as well as the style of the church.

Consider the colors of your church decor. If the building utilizes neutral colors (like beige, brown, white, and gray), most primary and secondary colors will match well. The colors should also complement the occasion and the church season.

Lay out an organized plan ahead of time and make sure you have the equipment that’s needed, whether that’s a ladder, hand carts, or other tools. Making sure your decorations are stored properly and easy to access also goes a long way.

Church Banners

If you can’t afford to buy new banners for every season and special event, there are a few alternatives. Utilize the skills of your congregation if you have access to talented decorators, crafters, or painters. They could adorn cloth with imagery or favorite verses from scripture.

Another option is using raw pieces of fabric for styling church furniture, like tables, windowsills, altars, pews, and chairs. If your church has high ceilings, that’s another great place for hanging cloth or decor. A durable fabric (like gabardine, burlap, canvas, or linen) will be able to survive the wear and tear of multiple uses.

Visit your local garage sales. You may be able to find used fabric, tablecloths, rugs, and ribbons that you can repurpose.

Flowers

Before selecting a type of flower, consider what it represents. For example, poinsettias are associated with good cheer and prosperity, while yellow daffodils represent rebirth.

Decorating the church with freshly cut flowers is very beautiful. But fake flowers and trees require less maintenance, and they can be used again each year.

Garland or tree branches also make for elegant pieces, whether you’re decorating for the Christmas season or the springtime.

Lights

Lighting can be used in many ways. Candles or warm-colored stringed lights will provide a cozy, festive feel. Meanwhile, layered spotlights can have a dramatic effect on a church stage, drawing everyone’s attention up front. Using different colors or intensities of lighting will also affect the mood of the room.

Exterior

Sprucing up your church exterior will help you make a great first impression and welcome visitors into your church. Consider decorating your church sign or entranceway with:

  • Pedestals with greeneries
  • Floral arrangements across the top or on either side
  • A banner with a favorite quote
  • An Easter or Christmas wreath

We hope these tips help you create a terrific environment where your parishioners feel comfortable congregating. If you’re looking for comfortable folding chairs or stacking chairs for your church services and events, contact ChurchPlaza today!
