4 Tips for Furnishing a Church Sanctuary

A church sanctuary is more than just a meeting place; it’s a space to minister and worship together. The furniture in your sanctuary should align with your church’s mission and the activities that take place there.

The space should be visually appealing, functional, and comfortable, with a natural flow that promotes the goals of the people who gather there. Whether your church is just starting out or it’s time to upgrade your older sanctuary, we hope you find these decorating ideas helpful!

1. Choose Quality and Value

Although the lowest prices can be tempting to the budget-conscious, purchasing quality furnishings can be much less costly in the long run. Look for communion tables, church chairs, pulpit sets, altars, and sanctuary accessories that are constructed from quality materials and designed to last for years. Paying more up-front may reduce the need to repair and replace items.

When deciding where to splurge and where to save, consider the fact that the seating, stage, and pulpit or lectern will likely get more use than anything else. You may be able to cut costs elsewhere and arrange your budget in favor of those items.

2. Opt for Timeless Appeal

Most churches don’t have the budget to completely remodel every few years as designs change. Instead of imitating the latest design trend, opt for a look that will stand the test of time. Choose classic sanctuary designs and neutral colors for your flooring and furniture, and allow your accent colors to provide the pop. Paint, cushions, wall decor, window coverings, and seasonal decorations for a church sanctuary are less expensive to replace than flooring and furniture.

3. Invest in a Functional Church Sanctuary Design

Sanctuary furniture will quickly lose its appeal if it doesn’t meet your specific needs. Consider how your sanctuary will be used and what furniture will best suit those purposes. For example, do you need a sturdy pulpit that stays in one place, or would a light and portable lectern be better? Which chair design will work best for the gatherings that take place in your church? You may choose chairs with arms or those without. Lightweight chairs are easier to move around, and stackable chairs are better for those who may need to set them aside or store them occasionally.

4. Consider the Flow of the Space

When considering what furniture makes the most sense for your specific church, you should also plan for the flow of people and events. An overabundance of sanctuary furnishings will make your space look crowded and could cause a hazard for people moving through. Keep entrances, exits, and seating easily accessible. Make sure each grouping of chairs has good visual access to the speaker. High traffic areas should be kept clear of furnishings. On the other hand, you may wish to add more furniture to certain areas to facilitate discussion. It’s all about finding the right balance and flow for your space.
